In 2016, OnSite Energy was hired by NorthWestern Energy to design and build the 385.92 kW utility-scale solar array referred to as the Bozeman Solar Project. In partnership with the City of Bozeman and Montana State University, the Bozeman Solar Project serves as a pilot project to test out different technologies that are not typically used in Montana, such as "smart inverters" and the community solar model.
Part of NorthWestern Energy's side of the deal was to develop a monitoring website that updates throughout the day to show how much power is being produced, where it is going, and when. The monitoring also tracks the environmental impact of the project through emissions being avoided and the number of houses being offset by the energy produced. Students at MSU are using the Bozeman Solar Project as a study site for various research projects on renewable energy, and will be analyzing the effect of smoke on solar production in the coming months.
