Here are five essential questions to ask any solar provider before you commit:

1. How long have you been in business?

Experience matters. Solar installations are complex systems that need to be designed, permitted, installed, and maintained properly. A company with years of experience (and roots in your community) is more likely to deliver high-quality work and stay accountable for years to come.

2. What certifications do you and your team have?

Solar isn’t just about putting panels on a roof—it’s about designing safe, efficient systems that meet code and last for decades. Look for providers with NABCEP certification (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners), which is a nationally recognized credential in the solar industry.

3. Do you use in-house installers or subcontractors?

Some solar companies outsource their installations to third-party crews, which can lead to inconsistency in quality or communication. Working with a provider that uses in-house crews gives you peace of mind that the team installing your system is trained, experienced, and fully aligned with the company’s standards.

4. What kind of warranty do you offer?

A solar energy system should be a long-term investment, and your installer should stand behind their work. Ask about both the equipment warranties (usually offered by the manufacturer) and the workmanship warranty (offered by the installer). A strong warranty shows the provider is confident in the durability and quality of their work.

5. Will I be able to monitor my system’s performance?

Once your system is up and running, you should be able to see how it’s performing. A good solar provider will walk you through the monitoring platform—so you can track your energy production, spot issues early, and understand the full benefits of your investment.
